A case for Ayurveda

Now the english speaking intellectuals are mocking at a minister being appointed for ayurveda. Maybe because the move was made by Modi. I sometimes think the country has become less important to them than their pet likes and dislikes. I have  objections to much that the BJP says and does. But that does not mean we can lose our sense of the country's needs.
I see no grounds to object to this initiative. At all.
My response in another thread -
" Ayurveda is a system of vast capability, in the here and now. I have no idea what is being mocked at here. I think the intellectual integrity has been lost, where people could stand by the truth even if it came from the mouths of those they had differances with. Here truth is being jettisoned because of personal dislikes and likes. For all my differances with the BJP, here I have to accept that a valid move is made. Ayurveda needs to be returned to the people of this country.
And these are some cases that I have personally seen and documented. as treated by a very capable practitioner of the system. Ayurveda is an inheritence that India needs to claim. Or will we claim it only after the west puts its stamp of approval on it ? http://www.girijasanjeevani.com/casestudies.htm"

Aparna Krishnan why not ? was there ever any IPR concept in any sane world ?

Aparna Krishnan My own ideas and words would have built up over many discussions with many friends, many readings ... which is why to earn our living with bread labour is so important - and to surrender all intellectual creations to the greater commons.

Aparna Krishnan When invaluable ayurvedic texts have been surrendered thus, with even the names of the authors never mentioned ... we realise what a perversion the current IPR concept is.

Naveen Manikandan Periasamy Aparna Krishnan IPR laws(as seen in many notable cases) is a scam intended to available swindle knowledge for private profit. The world is suffering a great deal because Pharma, Food and Agro companies are rounding up and swindling ancient wisdom which was free for all seekers. Today attempts are being made to patent Turmeric and Basmati rice by countries where they are not grown. Had not Salk made polio vaccine public, the world would been a different place today. The sudden spike in western scientific progress in 16th century is no coincidence. Newton seems to have copied Calculus from worth of literature published by the Kerala School of Mathematics esp Yuktibhāṣā. Atleast the Arab mathematician/translator Al-Jabr (of Algebra fame) had the gratitude to name the real source.

Aparna Krishnan I am actually speaking in a more general sense about intellectual creations coming from, and needing to be given back to the community. Without a concept of the self or ego there. But I also agree with what you are saying Naveen.

Nityanand Jayaraman Fully agree. I am all for a ministry for Indian systems of medicine. I only hope that this increased attention does not convert the service-oriented Indian systems into the profit-oriented monster that western medicine has now become. Neither should Indian systems, yoga and ayurveda be reduced to boutique medicine that is out of reach of our people. I hope and will support any move for this ministry to revive local health traditions so that the need for doctors is minimised.

Aparna Krishnan Yes, Nityanand, these are things we need to be alert and aware about. The village health systems are so closely similar to ayurveda, that were this to get broad based the benefits would be immense. Parallely the village identity and their practices will get strengthened.
