From Dalitwada, with Pride
Once again the famous Palaguttapalle bags have made their mark around the world. When Together We Will, a social justice organization in the Harford & Cecil county region planned on having a gay pride event, no sooner had they come up with a name and logo than the women of Dalitwada, a hamlet in the drought-prone village of Palaguttapalle, got to work screenprinting on the newly designed drawstring backpack.
In record time Upper Chesapeake Bay Pride went from computer screen to screen print, squeegeed by hand onto canvas.
When Aparna, who coordinates the marketing and sales for the women in Dalitwada, sent the photo of her daughter in the mango orchards sporting the backpack we could not have been more delighted.
Except … the Upper Chesapeake Bay Pride logo was in color – a rainbow of colors, in fact – and the group in Dalitwada worked in only one color at a time. Turning this predicament into a feature, the bags became the basis for a “paint your own bag” booth at the Pride Festival. Children and adults alike sprawled on the ground around the table and let their creative energies flow to make every bag unique.

The festival affirmed and celebrated the diversity of gender identities and sexual orientations and showcased resources to stand against discrimination toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) people and promote self-affirmation, dignity, equality and community.
Thanks to the women of Dalitwada for bringing their talents to the table and adding joy and creativity to the first ever Pride Festival in the Upper Chesapeake region.
In the Cooch Behar & Murshidabad Districts of West Bengal, AID supports the Karna-Subarna Welfare Society, comprising transgender persons seeking to improve their livelihood opportunities.
The Association for India’s Development Volunteer Responsibility Code calls upon all volunteers to respect equality of all people regardless of race, ethnicity, caste, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, and refrain from any actions or statements that constitute prejudice.
