US of A

Naveen Manikandan Periasamy I had a lot of these grand assumptions about the American dream before I came here.. After three years of being here, most of those assumptions have fallen flat on the face. If you are looking for greener pastures for you and your children worthy of settling down, I would suggest going to Canada or EU where you can eat Organic food, can expect substantial government investment for free healthcare, education and benefits for its citizens for the same tax that they pay as Americans do. You will be surprised to see homeless people and mendicant in every street corner or subway stations struggling to make a living everyday in the US. Before the 80's life used to be good for the middle class which made up the highest percentage of the american society. Today's scenario is starkly different. With the rising wage gaps and inequality, it is hard to get by unless you are in the upper middle class or higher with all the medical and educational costs that have spiraled out of control. The American public debt is $18 Trillion and private debt is over $140 Trillion far more than their GDP and annual budgets. The entire country is living beyond it's means in credit - The results of which we see on the streets. Some say the debt cannot be repaid unless there is another large scale war. Crime and incarceration rates are the highest in the world. If corruption is common place in India, it is legal and institutionalized in the US. A crass materialist can ignore all the ills of such a society and praise it's glories to the skies, but for the spiritually inclined there is very little to offer. You have every right to pursue your American dream, but I hope you would have nice things to say about your motherland unlike the Dinesh D'Souzas and Bobby Jindals.
Rohit Bansal It is amazing, almost nauseating when people, who pursue evidence-based belief systems, choose, conveniently to ignore evidences staring at their face, just because they have blind faith in america - a "nation" which, stands tall, only from an extremely selfish, corrupt and violent point of view. I feel sympathy for those who believe that critique of america is "self-consolation" as it clearly shows how little they believe in humanity.
Aparna Krishnan i wonder if the 'supporters of the American Dream are actually playing the devil's advocate - because i cannot really beleive that anyone with a modicum of intelligence cannot see through the depravity of that nation of murderers - then and now. Then they massacered the red indiands. And now they survive only on war industry, fomenting wars.
Rohit Bansal "... they have at least succeeded ..." !!! Yes, in annihilating civilizations, in murdering people, in unleashing thier war industry on others, in naturalization of violence, YES, definitely yes. I hope, and wish, that one ponders over what they have succeeded in. The world produces enough to satisfy hunger for everyone, but it is due to leeches, like that nation, that a country like ours has to suffer in hunger and poverty. I
Aparna Krishnan Rohit Bansal, its a sad day when for all their villainy they are being feted. And when they seem the yardstick for other nations.
Rohit Bansal Yes, it is a land of opportunity which has been created on the foundation of the massacre of an entire civilization, and which is constantly being fed / nurtured by the blood of communities and countries all over the globe.

....
Instead of buying weaving, farming, cooking, tailoring products and services from our own people, if we continue to buy from EU, USA and UK and finance the comfortable living of millions of asylum seekers there - they live a far far far better life than a family earning one CRORE a month for the last 15 years in India. Our govt is forced to buy the products from those countries under a threat that our IIt and IIm grads there would lose their jobs - so continue to buy the muck dumped. Essentially we in India buying their products and those employed there paying taxes there are paying not only to kill our soldiers thro pakisthan, but are also ending up destroying the livelihood of our kith and kin. Sleepwalking with eyes open.
