Why we avoided being a funded NGO

Why Naren and Uma and Nagesh and I just stayed in the village and did what we could as part of the local community, drawing on the community's own strengths. Maybe we could have 'acheived' more as an NGO. But the pitfalls of becoming a funded NGO are many ...
(from another thread)
Uma Shankari I went with my farmer friends recently to a "great" organic farm cum training centre in MP; The trees looked healthy, the guavas tasted wonderful. The trainer kept saying that his bamboo clump alone would fetch him one lakh rupees; and the whole farm is worth several lakhs every year; to which my friends asked how much did they sell which crop and to their surprise they realised that all the lakhs were virtual, and the real income comes from trainings and the government.
The process of enriching the soil was not only long, but they were even buying the mud as well as the mulch material! My farmer friends very sincerely had a dip in the Narmada river everyday for 3 days and came back, with knowledge and wisdom.
I stayed on for another day, wen around the village and found not one farmer was practising the methods taught by the training centre, not even the farmer who worked as a helper in the centre for 7 years!
