)Rajputs or Thakurs ruled most of North and Central India as Royalty, Nobility , Taluqdars along with Mughals for much of the hundreds of years pre British .
They continued as Rajas along with many Nawabs under the British.
With many Maratha royalty and a few Jats among Sikhs and Hindus , was majority of the Indian ruling class.
But if you look at the Castes who were Prime Ministers after 1947, in the 70 years Brahmins of all political persuasions have ruled for about 50 years , Punjabi Hindu and Sikh Khatris (supported by Congress) for about 11 years , Jats and Vokkaliga for 2 years , a Kayastha for 2 years , and Rajputs only 2 years .
And finally an OBC Ghanchi , PM Modi now for 3 years.

Even a Dalit leader like Mayawati is fully dependent on the Brahmin community to help it get power or govern.
But on the state-levels , Jats , Marathas and Rajputs have in many enclaves maintained their power , even without being part of any political party , as powerful local satraps .

And Uttar Pradesh is a great state to study the continuing power of the Rajputs and the Jats .
After 1947 , in what is called License Raj , then LPG Raj (Liberalisation, Privatisation, Globalisation) of the 14 in 70 years , 4 Brahmins (Narasimha Rao included) of Congress ruled for 42 odd years ,1 Brahmin of Janata Party (Morarji Desai a Anavil Brahmin) ruled for almost 2 years, 1 Brahmin of BJP ruled for 6 years (Together 6 Brahmin PM's for 50 years) .
2 Jat or Vokkaliga together ruled for about 1-2 years (Charan Singh , Deve Gowda) .
No Maratha has ever been a Prime Minister . They have been Chief Ministers , the Scindias , the Pawars , the Vasundhara Raje .
Only 2 Rajput Prime-Ministers , VP Singh for 343 days and Chandrasekhar for 223 days . Together less than 2 years .
Funnily the Punjabis who have literally no constituency except as a Sikh in Punjab , the Punjabi Hindus have almost none , have been Prime Ministers on 4 occasions , 2 times acting PM Gulzarilal Nanda , Manmohan Singh for 10 years and I K Gujral for 332 days .
Dr. Manmohan Singh is a Kukhrain of the Kohli subcaste among Khatris (All the Sikh Gurus were Khatris) .
Gulzarilal Nanda and IK Gujral were both Punjabi Hindu Khatris .
The only Kayastha , Lal Bahadur Shastri ruled less than 2 years .
