"I am spiritual, but not religious" is a style statement these days.
No villager will ever say that.
Happy I have never said that either.

- Surya ManthaI am neither. I am a Hindu. I am a skeptic. I am fine as long as you are asking questions. You lose me when you say you have the answer3

- Amitava BhattacharyaBaul is a village music, rejects religion, but spiritual. There are 2500 practicing Bauls in Bengal. It reached Kolkata and educated Bengal through the hands of Tagore. So, in Bengal, we have many of this category - both in villages and in cities.

Active - Ramachandra RoddamAparna ji , I came across this misinformation give about Bauls of bengal. I do seva for this tradition Soni felt compelled to provide broader picture.Baul is a syncretic tradition / Parampara which has elements of Vaishnava , tantra , Bauddha and in some sub traditions influence of Sufi. Now we call the above facets religion Dharma or spirituality is matter of one's interpretation.Baul at the core is path of Bhakti. Like all bhakti paths across India , masters like Akka Mahadevi in Karnataka , Lal Ded in Kashmir of shaiva parampara or annamaya of Vaishnava sampradaya or countless Maharashtrian bhakti Yogi's , all condemn segregation or unwarranted discrimination in the name of orthodoxy, religion or caste. Bauls too have the same message. In Bengal , communists , who are ideologically anti thetical to Religion , co-opted Baul and pushed them in the zone of vastuvadi , from a materialists dimension. Most Bauls are uncomfortable with this unwarranted patronage. It indeed was practise of masters from lower rung community. Not only Tagore , who was.especially inspired.by Lalon fakir , even Sri Ramakrishna was deeply touched by them. There is much I can write. But I leave you with this wonderful rendition of the Baul song which is filled with Bhakti bhava. In short I agree with assesment about conjectures that take place in the name of not religious but spiritual. The Music Project : Parvathy BaulYOUTUBE.COMThe Music Project : Parvathy Baul1
