Why Nobel Prize ?

The Nobel Prize farce.

I wonder why we Indians bother so much about the Nobel Prizes - so much so that we even celebrate even when some Indian who quit the shores of this land without a backward glace gets it.
We can set our own standard of greatness, and that well be without awards. The love for awards is the beginning of the fall - for nations as for individuals. The Charaka Samhita, imo the greatest of medical texts, never seeked nor got any award. As also Shakespere.

Awards only make the mind smaller - of him who desired it and got it, and him who tried to and did not. Always.

Komakkambedu Himakiran Anugula Indians don't bother about it.

English News Media and it's viewers bother about it. Don't worry, it's less than 0.4% of the TV viewing population, which itself is about 60% of the population only.

Effectively, about 3 million people watch English news, that's 0.24%......We can safely say that it's a miniscule fringe..but in the interest of safeguarding diversity, we can call them Indians!
How does India watch television? A lowdownIf a TV set was indeed an idiot box, the world has more idiots than sane…

Last year,

"... the announcement from the Norwegian Nobel Committee was both politically charged and condescending:

The Nobel Committee regards it as an important point for a Hindu and a Muslim, an Indian and a Pakistani,
to join in a common struggle for education and against extremism. Many other individuals and institutions in the international community have also contributed. It has been calculated that there are 168 million child labourers around the world today. In 2000 the figure was 78 million higher. The world has come closer to the goal of eliminating child labour.

The announcement draws on the old theme of Western “parity” between India and Pakistan, and then calls out the purportedly “Hindu” and “Muslim” affiliations of the awardees. Now, going back at least 10 years we did not find the religion of the awardees mentioned in the Nobel Peace Prize announcement. Barack Obama is not called out as a Christian, nor are the affiliations of Marti Ahtisaari, Al Gore, Mohammad Yunus, or any of the other awardees called out. Why the necessity to call out Satyarthi as a Hindu?"

Aparna Krishnan yes, the nobel prize is a way of the US globally validating its own choices. I feel more and more that we would serve our cause best by compleletly ignoring them and their nobel prizes and other shenanigans. And building our own paradigms, sans all awards as has been the tradition in this land. Because here in tradition, along with serious learning the other parallel line was to question the ego itself. The list of virtues begin with AmAnatvam, adambhatvam ... (the surrender of pride and pomp - which is what this prize and every other prize are about.)

Aparna Krishnan Malala getting the Nobel prize is discomfiting. For one thing 'Schooling rights' is certianly not the greatest of issues as we cope with pervasive injustices. The white man pipes the tunes and we 'natives' dance to it. I pity ourselves and our giving traction to his views and to the perversion of awards.
