Limitations of Marx and Freud

" ... Marx does not say that some parts of history are made up of class struggles; no, 'scientific materialism', not very scientifically, extends this partial observation to nothing less than the whole of 'the history of all hitherto existing society'.
Freud, again, is not content to report a number of clinical observations but offers a universal theory of human motivation, asserting, for instance, that all religion is nothing but an obsession neurosis.
Relativism and positivism, of course, are purely metaphysical doctrines with the peculiar and ironical distinction that they deny the validity of all metaphysics. including themselves. "

Afsan Chowdhury Aparna Krishnan Thanks. What i liked is the challenge to the Marxist and Freudian dogma, something which for me is important as it trivializes every thought that hasn't emerged from the belly of the West. Thanks
Aparna Krishnan To borrow a theory framed and structured in another civilization misleads. The Left lost their bearings there. In an essentially religious civilization, to consider religion opium is to lose ones way right in the beginning.

Afsan Chowdhury Spot on. I could be one of the few in Bangladesh who teaches the role of religion in social evolution as a transitional force and not dogma. This religion bashing is probably the most ignorant thing South Asian scholars do. All civilizations have religious cores. Thanks

Aparna Krishnan ... and in the village I have seen that they follow dharmam defying materialism many many times. A sense of vastness, including many lifetimes, gives dimensions to life other than current immediate gratification. One needs to immerse in a civilization, to belong, to understand.

Aparna Krishnan Many of my educated countrymen and countrywomen have lost India, they will not get it. However many revolutions they try to lead.

Aparna Krishnan They deep within consider people as 'masses' or as 'bags of potatoes'. And their beliefs and their gods and their whole praxis as 'superstitions'. And themselves as the Liberators.

The arrogance amazes.

Afsan Chowdhury Its this fiction of hatred they need to sustain Westernity. I am doing a book on "Villages in 1971 war" which is where history lives. I think the colonial elite has not perpetuated genocide but the killing of independent thought. Thanks .

Aparna Krishnan Their days are numbered. I see it everywhere. People are claiming theiir space, their religions, their identity. Everywhere.

They could have used their space more intelligently but they squandered it away, in a sense of arrogance and disdain. That chapter is over, though they have not realized it.

Afsan Chowdhury I agree. I was asked at a seminar about the rise of religion and rejection of Western ideals etc as a threat and i said iif people want to be religious whiy should I have a problem ? Its amazing how easily they assume that its their position is the only option. Thanks
