Greta and India

With all respect to Greta.
When she thunders asking how the futures of the children are destroyed by climate change, people listen. Applaud. Take out protests.
The women of my village. No, the farmers of all villages.
Have been saying in every forum how their present has been devastated by climate change. How agriculture has folded up. How livlihoods have got finished. How the very present of their children is over.
Why was there no matching response ? Even in this country ?

    • Kavitha Nistala Gollapudi I am seeing the change but the change is very slow and again the voices are heard because they make sure it is heard! People share , create awareness here !!! I can see change it’s very very slow happening all over but majority don’t care about farmers or their situations! As long as food is on their plate majority don’t bother! I think everyone plays an important role in raising their concerns- people (us), government to look for alternatives and give them the much needed help and support system, learn new techniques again government and some independent organisations opening up avenues, aggressive awareness and protests , media honestly covering the critical issues vs masala news! Everyone and everything matters! That’s my opinion though everyone else might have a different opinion! As I’ve seen here in UK climate protests by students are heard and are seriously considered by everyone and there’s the media again giving the much needed coverage!

    • Janardhana Channagiri Even these reactions and acknowledge mentioned today in this country are mostly farce, not even symbolic; there are more a pass time reactions. There are not many who concert these into actions. Those who are sensible have acknowledged and have been acting based on the realities here.

    • Sameer Shisodia Start getting responses for them and in support of their asks too. It'll help.

    • Venkat Krishnan N The Kodaikanal Won't rap song also did well in India. Our farmers need to get together and create a moment/leadership on the lines of Sharad Joshi to be able to get things done.

      • Aparna Krishnan Venkat Krishnan N my wonderment here us how the urbabs of India relate so easily to greata, and stay disconnected from the women if the villages.

Those stories are also there everywhere. On my wall daily, till many probably even unfollow ...
      • Venkat Krishnan N Unfortunately, that is their reality. We need to get more people from urban India to actually visit villages, to change that.
      • Aparna Krishnan Venkat Krishnan N the urban poverty itself is invisible to most. The glass walled restaurants symbolise that. The malaise is Deep.

      • Venkat Krishnan N True! Very true!!!!

    • Rahul Banerjee Soros and Gates are wise enough not to put their money behind the farmers the way they have done behind Greta

      • Aparna Krishnan Rahul Banerjee our Indian people. Respond to Greta over their own. Thats the wondering.
        2
      • Rahul Banerjee Aparna Krishnan yes because greta has powerful sponsors
      • Kavitha Nistala Gollapudi Protests were done for Climate change by students even in India and a Hyderabad girl was all over news for her views but the lack of backing, people as well backing them matters a lot.. That's the difference there. Greta has backing and excellent coverage that she's taking the word across globally. There's a saying 'poruginti pullakoora ruchi' - that's what is happening.
      • Aparna Krishnan Kavitha Nistala Gollapudi we the educated go with the tunes of the west. Thats our saga.

      • Kavitha Nistala Gollapudi Aparna Krishnan Garu I feel there are both pros and cons that we can all learn from each other. Cons sink in faster than the pros.
      • Aparna Krishnan Kavitha Nistala Gollapudi thats not the point. The point bud why wecthe educated are more tuned to western narratives than to our own.
      • Kavitha Nistala Gollapudi Aparna Krishnan Garu, the attitute and the mentality of the people matters a lot. Its the nature to not think about our country in real terms and only live their life to the boundaries drawn by them. Most of them see the Big West from a different angle and hence their ga ga. Again, I feel that Greta is just a name who is standing and raising her voice out bravely to bring everyone globally BUT with a good coverage and support system. I am sure someone from our country will be in the same boat if there was a proper support system and backing to raise their voice and concerns! As long as the support system doesn't work right and people after raising their voices calm down later it's not going to happen- you will never see the real Greta's come out in our country- we are more scared thinking what will be the repurcussions!

    • Rama Narayanan Dysfunctional families have hidden abuse at their core. And the one to say it, is usually ostricized by the family. It is the same in society is also. So when a celeb says me too..... She is a spokesperson for all PPL who have been victimized. We need symbols to make this noise heard. Greta is one such. Alarmingly they are getting younger and younger. Social awakening requires different tools. Greta is one such

    • Prakash Thangavel Akka just like organic, climate change is a elite problem. Solutions will be provided for the masses to implement.

    • Maya Gomez It should not matter Which Voice is heard and recognised. It’s a fickle world, with a fleeting attention span.

What should matter is that a voice is heard. Any voice.
      1
      • Aparna Krishnan Maya Gomez my point is different Mary. Why were we unable to hear, and march for, our voices.

That answer may hold many answers.
    • Sudhindra Mohan Sharma Because our womenfolk do not speak a foreign language. And in that they are not Extra-ordinary. They are in fact way behind being even ordinary. So we , and the powers that be, and the pseudo intellectuals who think Climate is actually just a synonym of weather, while they are engaged in "multipronged strategy formulations through community consultations" in a five star convention centre, are not impressed. The govt officers and the politicians are not bothered to be impressed. Being impressed is not on their agenda unless some bollywood or cricket celebrity picks up a bucket to save water and save this mother earth.
So, thats why Gretas are heard while our own Geetas, Seetas Ramyas are invisible to us. ðŸ˜¢ðŸ˜¢

    • Sheshadri Ramaswamy Self centeredness

      To the core
      • Aparna Krishnan meaning ?
      • Sheshadri Ramaswamy Aparna Krishnan only a minute fraction stand up and fight for well being of all lifeforms
Rest are self centered and turn a blind eye to injustice happening to them and others
Self centeredness means if their personal problems are solved they are happy but don't care about anyone

    • Suman Bahuguna it may be worth connecting both for good.. global and local.. and not creating further divisions
    • Suresh Rangarajan Aparna Krishnan.
I don't think the comparison is apt.

      1. Why do you think Greta got to Talk at the UN? She made it her lifes purpose even though it would affect her present and future.

      2. We did have the Jallikattu protests that was oriented towards the a farmers. Why something like that has not happened for climate change protests? Because nobody made it so important.

      3. How many farmers are actually protesting climate change by stopping the use of chemical fertilisers or even conserving water in summer months by planting non-water intensive plants? I keep asking in villages as to why they plant paddy and sugarcane on a summer when the rains have failed. The response is to each his own.

Please note the farming community is also responsible for the mess we are in, from destroying trees to create cultivable land to moving away from traditional farming methods. How many farmers you know DONOT use tractors or harvestors? I don't know of any.

If the world takes note of Greta and there is indeed something done for controlling climate change, let us and the farmers be grateful to her.
