Disdain for the farmer

Some patriot settled in USA told me that the Indian farmer is useless and cannot feed even himself.

Immediate Unfriending done. Gives some small solace.

Shyamala Sanyal They calculate that 60% if the population, rural people and farmers , contribute 12% of our GDP.
So , they add , that this is uneconomical .

Aparna Krishnan If we bury GDP, we may still save the planet.

Mark Johnston Decades before facebook I was told by several people that I was rude and unfriendly because I abstained from unnecessary cash crops including tea, coffee and sugar. I think their logic was that their minor inconvenience at being offered water was far more important than the vast environmental and human destruction caused by the unfair trade. I remained, and still remain, comfortable with my choices.

Narayana Sarma Indian farmer remains poor because his labour is too under valued. Prices of grains, pulses and vegetables are kept artificially low while huge subsidies are doled out to industry involved essentially in producing goods of luxury. Capitalist economic logic with its industry-friendly tools like GDP ensures that everyone is kept in their place. Not knowing all this the young fools think too high of themselves and look down upon the very hand that fed them. These self important jokers with half baked ideas are surely a burden to the country they have migrated to.

Aparna Krishnan And when i was young I used to worry about 'brain drain' ! Now I think my stars they left.

దామోదర రెడ్డి Aparna Krishnan good,, if they keep live in those states taking their parents and everything too.. and never return.. otherwise these all idiots come back and pose, and parents too starts using cars in villages,, and fill enormous inferiority in all others, which will never cure. as result remaining all are forcing their kids into this 'progressive' edcn... and killing their childhood, and making them worthless, and their future uncertain..

Ranjeeta Patnaik This whole affair of right to judge and comment on matters least understood, is the cons of social media. It must be ignored.

Palanivelu Rangasamy Under what conditions Indian farmers keep this society running is beyond the imagination of most. Not just the ones settled abroad, even those (non-farmng population) who are here in the country are absolutely unaware of the farming realities. It is moment to moment existence for them for the very sake of this country.

Chidambaran Subramanian I think its sad that farmers face a bleak future and Govt policies are making it worse.
Forget your US friend for a second. I just looked at that statement , removed the useless and 'even' bit and I realized it presents a sad fact

Palanivelu Rangasamy Chidambaran Subramanian If Indian farmer is not feeding himself, who is feeding them? Is there any answer for this? Yes, they do not feed themselves enough and burn themselves to keep this society running. For living like a candle, mindless non-participatory criticism is the way of showing one's gratitude. Almost 70 to 80% of food production in this country comes from such farmers who are branded of not being able to feed themselves.

Not just in today's world, all through the history farming community has been dominated and subjugated. For doing any damn thing, farming community has to provide the fuels. But the thankless civilization which eats from their hands damns them to the corner.

Let anybody say anything. I aver, if humanity has to be healthy and happy, farmers should be elevated to such a state of mind that they produce food happily.

Otherwise, if they are cornered to operate in the middle of sufferings, humanity will not be consuming food but paving the way for unhealthy and unhappy future ahead.
