Against all odds

Against all odds ...

Jayanthi, wants to learn 'English'. The days I am at the village she comes home daily after school and studies into the night. The month I am away every evening she revises on her own in her house ... and when I go after a month she again comes, and we start where we left.
Each time my leaving the village will be delayed day by day ... 'Why don't you stay one more week madam, OK two more days madam ...'

Illiterate, landless parents ... schooling at a Telugu medium government school ... What odds compared to children who have educated parents, in homes where food is not an issue, where good schools and guidance exists.

Something is terribly wrong somewhere ... some yardstick is wrong.
