(April 2014)
Varalu moved to the hut after spending two years as an unwanted guest in her brother's house. Her husband abandoned her when she was pregnant with twins, and she had slid into depression. The prospect of bringing up three infants with no assets, no education (10th fail) was overpowering.
She moves on step by step. She teaches Sasi, Eashwaramma's grandson and earns some small money and milk for her children. She sources, boils and serves milk to the school children and earns another small sum. She will make pickle and we will try to market it for her in Chennai ... She has to learn tailoring ... but with three infants, and with the sense of helplessness, everything is a challenge.

But she goes on in goodness and gentleness ...

Varalu was very happy when I told her that her tomato pickle was appreciated, and is standing on the shelves of a shop. Village people everywhere are ONLY looking for decent work to earn by -
and the onus on buying their products is squarely on us. Amen.
