What matters most ...

Looking back on half a lifetime the times that i topped a class, or won a race or got some prize simply are not on any memory screen. Not even when I gave somebody something out of my surplus.

It is those rare one or two instances when one had the heart to offer up something that mattered most of all at that time, in return for somebody's else's good.

These vast processes of exchange hap
pen. Babur offered his life for his son Humayun. Babur died, and Humayun came out of his illness. Christ took on the sins of humanity, and carried the cross. Christ died on the cross.

This is what we need to teach our children. What finally matters when all is said and done. But maybe these are not taught, but learnt ever anew ...
