The lamp in our home, as in every other home in the village, anchors the dawn and the dusk and the passing of time. The moment of stillness when one lights the sandhya deepam and bows in wordlessness and thoughtlessness.
Every dusk one looks for a daub of cowdung that one places between two leaves and places under the lamp before lighting it. This is the 'salla', and it will protect the lamp from feeling heated, they say.
Just as divinity extends to all, similarly does compassion in the Indian philosophy.
