Roots - 1

I wish we could look beyond JNU and TISS into the real understandings and strengths and perspectives in the tribal and rural perspectives and histories of this land. To understand the essential foundations of this land and to build on that understanding.
I wonder how many in these hallowed institutions have read Kumarappa and Dharampal as much as they have read Marx.

Komakkambedu Himakiran Anugula If they can all read and write in their native tongues, that itself will be a great achievement. Marxism/Maoism are even worse than Capitalism as they attract the ones who want to do good, rather than capitalism which is sheer money based engagement. Too many bright minds lost to extreme left thinking. I'll take the communists of TN anyday. They hail from all castes, know their Marx as much as they know they sangam literature. They live and work amongst the people. Even now, they are the hope for the ones without any hope. Latest is that they have fought and won the right to organize Unions in IT companies as many complaints of exploitation, denial of work etc are increasing.

Aparna Krishnan So Marxism (or any ism) rooted in the ground gives perspective. And leads to readings and understandings well beyond that ism. These hallowed instritution imo can be closed - for the greater common good. And the staff and students disperse into villages - to learn from the village people, rather them to teach and emancipate them !

Aparna Krishnan such posts are incidentally sure fire way to lose more and more friends - in and with these hallowed institutes !! have already been unfriended by a few such patriots !!

Komakkambedu Himakiran Anugula Culling is good!

Aparna Krishnan Sure. once people decide that villages are backward superstitious 'religious' places, and need to be saved from their own ignorance and backwardness, there is little common ground left.

Aparna Krishnan As a token their 'rural dances' are showcased. The white man was never this condescending as many modern marxists !

Aparna Krishnan Hindutva is as bad.

Naveen Manikandan Periasamy If TN communists move away from marxism and embrace a more native brand of socialism like that of Gandhi, then they are a great alternative to the hegemony of dravidian parties

Komakkambedu Himakiran Anugula That moment has passed. The biggest downside to their ideology in TN is the alien nature of Marxism/Communism to the Indian milieu. Tamils have always been a trading/business people. Sustainable business models is what they should be propounding rather than total revolution of the Marxist/Maoist kind.

Also, the local communists are voiceless when it comes to their central Politburo which is filled with uprooted elite who get their Marxism from the books rather than from people's movements. Their irrational bias toward Russia/China while berating the US/West makes their rhetoric hollow. For e.g. they will oppose American/French nuclear plants but support the Russian one!

Aparna Krishnan how some of the best brains have bought into alien theories is what baffles. When we have our own wisdoms for the asking in the villages and towns and in vernacular literature.

Komakkambedu Himakiran Anugula Loathing of the self and the roots.
